Abstract: Testing of an active drilling vibration damper (AVD) system at TerraTek Laboratory, under conditions designed to induce vibration, demonstrated that the use of the AVD reduced vibration, maintained more consistent weight-on-bit, and increased rate of penetration (ROP). These tests demonstrated that the AVD is likely to provide significant time and cost savings, particularly in deep wells. The results of these tests will be outlined.
Related NETL Project: The goal of the related NETL project DE-FC26-02NT41664, “Drilling Vibration Monitoring and Control System,” is to improve ROP and reduce the incidence of premature equipment failures in deep hard rock drilling environments by reducing harmful drillstring vibration.
