Project Dates: 8/1/2007 - 3/31/2010

Area of Research: Materials

Federal Project Manager: Mark Freeman

Project Objective: This research provides a first-principle measurement for quantifying thermal properties of coatings without specialized sample preparation. The measurement carries sufficient quantitative value to make meaningful assessments and comparisons of different coating materials, and can be richly descriptive of the multifaceted nature of service-related change over the lifetime of a coating. Objectives are to provide quantitative nondestructive measurements of the thermal protection offered by coatings on serviceable engine parts, to understand how individual elements of service-related change affect the thermal protection provided by a coating, and to monitor the complex physical changes that precede coating failure.
