One natural gas plant produces chemicals.

Fifty-six operating plants now convert coal and petroleum residues into a variety of chemicals, fertilizers, and gaseous fuels. Twenty-two of these plants use GE Energy gasifiers, 21 use Shell, eight use ECUST, three use Sasol Lurgi, and one uses GTI. Forty-two of these plants use coal as feedstock, 13 use liquid feedstocks, and one uses natural gas. The IGCC at China's Fujian Refinery is operating.

India

Five petroleum-based plants produce chemicals.

Five plants with petroleum, petcoke, and coal feedstocks produce chemicals. Two plants – one petroleum and one coal – produce power. Nippon Petroleum Refining Company built a power-producing plant in 2003 at their Negishi refinery. The Nakoso IGCC plant started up in late 2007 and uses coal as the feedstock and a Mitsubishi-designed gasifier.

Egypt

The Suez Ammonia Plant with three gasifiers began operation in 1966 using refinery residues and off-gases.

Qatar

The Pearl GTL plant is expected to begin the first phase of operation at the end of 2010. The plant has 18 Shell gasifiers.

South Africa

Sasol II and Sasol III plants produce clean fuels from coal using 80 advanced Lurgi gasifiers.

Of the two gasification based facilities, one petroleum-based plant produces chemicals, and the other, the Vresova IGCC Plant, in 2008 added a Siemens gasifier to use the tars, oils, and phenol concentrates resulting from the gasification of lignite in its other 26 (13 operating) gasifiers, to also produce power.

One new plant, which began operation in 2008, uses Carbona/GTI to gasify biomass/waste to produce power.

Three plants that began operation between 1983 and 2001 produce gaseous fuels and power and use biomass/wastes as their primary feedstock. The Oulu syngas plant began operation in 1965 and gasifies petroleum to produce chemicals.

Twelve plants are in operation, one using biomass/wastes to produce gaseous fuel, 10 petroleum-based, and one using natural gas, to produce chemicals.

Six plants are operating, with four plants using refinery residues as feedstock to generate electricity in combined-cycle plants and to produce hydrogen for refinery use. Two older plants built in 1958 and 1963 use natural gas to produce chemicals.

Three plants are operating, with two having global significance. The Nuon Buggenum coal-based IGCC plant began operations in 1994. The second plant is a petroleum residue facility at the Shell Pernis Refinery in Rotterdam that began operations in 1997 and produces power, steam, and hydrogen for use in the refinery. A third plant gasifies demolition wood to generate power.

One biomass plant produces gaseous fuels and one petroleum-based plant produces chemicals.

The Puertollano IGCC Plant gasifies coal and petcoke for power and one natural gas plant produces chemicals.

North America

Canada

Long Lake – an integrated oil sands operation – uses gasification to produce hydrogen, steam, and power to upgrade synthetic crude oil extracted from the tar sands.

Nine natural gas facilities primarily produce chemicals mainly using GE gasifiers.

Five plants are fed by coal and/or petroleum coke. Two produce power, two produce chemicals and fertilizers, and one produces substitute natural gas.

  • sg Solutions' Wabash River Gasification (E-gas gasifiers) using petcoke
  • Tampa Electric Polk Power Station's using GE coal gasification 250-MW IGCC unit
• The Eastman Chemical's Kingsport Integrated Coal Gasification Facility (using GE gasifiers) coal-to-chemicals plant.
• Coffeyville Resources Nitrogen Fertilizers includes petroleum coke gasification in GE gasifiers.
• Dakota Gasification's Great Plains Synfuels Plant, using Lurgi gasifiers to gasify lignite – the only plant in the world producing pipeline quality SNG.
• Four petroleum-based liquids plants produce chemicals or syngas for resale.
