Operating Facilities

Beginning operation in 1984, the Great Plains Synfuels Plant in Beulah, North Dakota, has produced synthetic natural gas (SNG) from lignite.  The facility uses 14 Lurgi gasifiers to produce approximately 54 billion standard cubic feet (scf) of SNG from more than 6 million tons of lignite every year.  In addition to SNG, a variety of byproduct process trains have been incorporated to add flexibility to plant economics.  The plant also uses pre-combustion carbon dioxide (CO₂) capture to produce large volumes of CO₂ for sale to Canadian oil producers for use in enhanced oil recovery (EOR).

Facilities in Planning/Development/Construction

• Indiana Gasification SNG
  Indiana Gasification, LLC, a subsidiary of Leucadia National Corp. will convert approximately 10,000 tons per day of coal into substitute natural gas (SNG) and liquefied carbon dioxide (CO₂). CO₂ generated by the production process will be compressed, sold and shipped from Indiana to the Gulf Coast and injected into depleted oil wells for enhanced oil production.

• South Hart SNG Project
  Great Northern and Allied Syngas have formed a strategic partnership to construct a coal-to-SNG facility in North Dakota.  British Gas Lurgi (BGL) gasification technology will be used by the plant to convert 14,000 tons per day (tpd) of lignite and 3,600 tpd of oxygen (O₂) into a gross output of 125 million scf of SNG per day.  In addition, the plant will employ 90% CO₂ capture (175 MMSCFD) for use in EOR projects.
