IEP – Post-Combustion CO2 Emissions Control
Novel Solid Sorbents for Post-Combustion CO2 Capture
Project No.: DE-FE0007707
RTI International is developing and demonstrating an advanced, solid sorbent-based CO2 capture process, utilizing novel "Molecular Basket Sorbent" (MBS) materials that can substantially reduce the parasitic energy loads and associated capital and operating costs for CO2 capture from coal-fired power plants compared to conventional aqueous amine CO2 scrubbing. Specific objectives for the project are:
- Optimization and production scale-up of advanced MBS materials in fluidizable form and development of associated fluidized-bed process technology
- Collection of critical process engineering data using single stage testing equipment to allow for a detailed design of a bench scale CO2 capture prototype based on MBS material
- Bench scale demonstration of effective and continuous CO2 capture from coal fired flue gas using an MBS-based process system
RTI will be part of a team that will transition Penn State University's current fixed-bed MBS material to fluidizable sorbents that can be readily scaled-up. The team will use new preparation procedures, alter current formulations to develop sorbents that use commercial precursor materials, and adapt acceptable manufacturing procedures to the new type of sorbent.
