• July 11, 2000
  McDermott Technology, Inc., Alliance, Ohio, will team with Babcock & Wilcox Co., Barberton, Ohio, and Allegheny Energy Supply, Masontown, Pennsylvania, to design a new type of coal-burning furnace that will combine the best, high-performance features of boilers from both the United States and Europe.  From furnaces commonly used in U.S. power plants, the engineers will adapt a design in which the steam-carrying boiler tubes are oriented vertically -- a simpler, less costly, and easier-to-fabricate design than the spiral tube furnaces common in European power plants. 

• August 2000
  Foster Wheeler Development Corp., Livingston, New Jersey, will design and test a key module that will be capable of fully gasifying some fuels or operating as a partial gasifier to produce a char for advanced combustion processes.  This capability will give engineers the flexibility to tailor a Vision 21 plant to process a wide variety of different fuels.  Proposed DOE award:  $2.29 million; private cost share: approximately $570,000.

• August 25, 1999
  Three Projects to Develop Filter Safeguard Devices for Future Power Plants DOE has selected three organizations to develop "filter-failure safeguard devices" that can protect future coal-powered energy plants from costly equipment damage should primary filters fail.

• February 4, 1999
  McDermott to Test New Alloys for 21st Century Power Plants
  DOE is awarding a contract to McDermott Technologies to test a new generation of high-strength, corrosion-resistant alloys under conditions that will mimic future high-efficiency, supercritical power plants.
