Coal-Fired Power Plants (CFPPs)
Who Uses Gasification?

Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) technology is one of the most promising concepts for advanced power generation. It combines efficient power production with low pollutant emissions. Although IGCC technology is thought of as new, the Department of Energy has been funding gasification research since the 1970s. The first successful IGCC demonstration on a commercial scale was a 110 megawatt Cool Water project near Barstow California. The Nation's first greenfield (built as a new plant) commercial plant was the Polk Power Station near Mulberry, FL. The technology is still emerging and changing but it is touted as the cleanest to date.

There are a number of IGCC power plants in operation around the world. Like those listed below, they are using gasification technology to create cleaner energy.

Puertollano IGCC Power Plant in Spain

Puertollano IGCC Power Plant - Ciudad Real Province - Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. This plant began operating primarily on syngas in 1998.

  Tamp Electric Plant
Tampa Electric IGCC Plant. The Polk Power Station is a 250 MWe, state-of-the-art integrated gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) power plant partially funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. The facility began demonstration operations in the fall of 1996.
  Nuon, Buggenum IGCC Power Plant
Nuon IGCC Power Plant, Buggenum, in the Dutch province of Limburg, Netherlands. The NUON Power Buggenum plant was built as a demonstration plant. It started operations in early 1994 and began commercial operation in 1998.The plant is a 253 MW (net) IGCC.
