Coal-Fired Power Plants (CFPPs)
What are the future goals for power plants?
There are a number of projects underway in support of the President's Clear Skies Initiative
and EPA's Clean Air Interstate Rule and Clean Air Mercury Rule that highlight industry and
government efforts to decrease the amount of pollution made by the power industry while meeting
the nation's increasing energy requirements. One of the most notable is the FutureGen Project.
The performance goal for this project is to develop and demonstrate technologies that reduce
emissions: mercury by 50-70% at 50-75% of today's cost; NOx to less than 0.15 pounds per
million Btus at 50-75% of the cost of selective catalytic reactors (SCR); and PM2.5 particulate
matter by 99.99%. By 2010, reduce mercury emission by 90%.
FutureGen – Tomorrow's Pollution-Free Power Plant
On July 27, 2005, an international alliance with eight charter members formed a non-profit
corporation called FutureGen Industrial Alliance, Inc. The alliance has an open membership
intended to encourage other coal and utility companies to join the effort. The newest partner,
Anglo American, joined on Feb. 23, 2006. The alliance, in partnership with the DOE, will
share costs to design, build, and operate the FutureGen plant. The not-for-profit Battelle
research and development firm is serving as the Alliance coordinator. The other company
members in partnership with the DOE are listed below:
American Electric Power
- Southern Company
- Consol Energy, Inc.
- Connect Energy Company
- Peabody Energy
- BHP Billiton
- Foundation Coal Corp.
- China Huaneng Group (an electric utility)
- Anglo American (Joined Feb. 23, 2006)
