Clean Coal Demonstrations
Round 2 Planning Opportunity: Clearwater Conf.

The 28th International Technical Conference on Coal Utilization & Fuel Systems, which took place on March 10-13, 2003 in Clearwater Florida, focused on the theme “Coal: Energy Security for the Future.” The Clearwater conference included a plenary session for CCPI on Wednesday morning chaired by Mike Eastman, CCPI’s Product Manager, National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). The session, titled “Overview of the Clean Coal Power Initiative,” was structured as a planning event for CCPI Round 2 and included DOE presenters that addressed strategic CCPI issues. Vic Der, Director of the Office of Power Systems, Office of Fossil Energy (FE), gave a presentation on the “Strategic Backdrop for the CCPI”.  Mike Eastman’s talk, “Demonstration Overview,” summarized the importance of successful technology demonstrations and their benefits, and NETL’s Charles Drummond, Senior Management and Technical Advisor, Office of System and Policy Support, prepared a presentation titled “DOE Project Benefits Methodology and Case Study.”

The objective of the Overview Session was to foster a creative environment by presenting current information regarding the DOE/FE Coal Technology Demonstration Program and to provide opportunities for interested parties to offer input and share perspectives on needs regarding the next CCPI solicitation.  The first hour consisted of panel presentations, with the second hour devoted to an interactive question and answer period.  The session was well attended with 150 participants displaying keen interest in the program.  The exchange of information between parties was highly beneficial, and the perspectives shared at the meeting will help to shape the CCPI program.  Additional input opportunities (e.g. Review of a draft solicitation) are anticipated.
