Founded in 1867, West Virginia University is the flagship land-grant, doctoral degree-granting research university in the state of West Virginia. WVU’s primary mission is to provide high-quality programs of instruction at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels; to stimulate and foster both basic and applied research and scholarship; to engage in and encourage other creative and artistic work; and to bring the resources of the University to all segments of society through continuing education, extension, and public service activities. |
RUA Capabilities: |
Aligned with its mission as a land-grant university serving the needs of the state, WVU established mining education, research, and extension programs nearly a century ago.
WVU offers many university-wide centers:
- National Research Center for Coal and Energy founded in 1979 advances energy technologies from coal mining and processing to oil and gas extraction, energy efficiency, mine land reclamation, health concerns, and water use by tapping the expertise of faculty members across WVU.
- WVNano promotes coordinated discovery in materials, devices, and biomolecular systems to advance molecular recognition and transport device innovation of societal impact in security, health, environment and energy applications.
- The Advanced Power and Electricity Research Center comprises an interdisciplinary faculty team currently involved in improving and evaluating the reliability of electric distribution systems through automated switching schemes.
- The College of Engineering and Mineral Resources faculty engages in research on coal, oil and natural gas, electrical power management, engine efficiency, and energy materials.
- The Davis College of Agriculture Natural Resources and Design founded the Natural Resource Analysis Center in the early 1990s to provide analysis and data to drive decisions in economic development and environmental sustainability.
- The Eberly College of Arts and Sciences Department of Geology and Geography offers resources and expertise for geological analysis and mapping with a focus on carbon sequestration.
