Vision 21 is the U.S. Department of Energy's initiative for developing the technology necessary for ultra-clean, near-zero emission, fossil fuel-based energy plants that will be needed in the coming decades of the 21st century. The goal of Vision 21 is to effectively remove the environmental concerns associated with the use of fossil fuels for producing electricity and transportation fuels. The approach is to focus on the key technologies that will be critical in Vision 21 energy plants, stress innovation and systems integration, involve stakeholders, produce early benefits ("spinoffs"), and emphasize flexibility to meet market needs.

The first Vision 21 Program Review Meeting, hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Fossil Energy, National Energy Technology Laboratory, was held in Morgantown, West Virginia, on November 6-7, 2001.

The Program Review provided a forum for program participants, potential users of new technology, and other interested parties, to review the status of Vision 21 technology development. Presentations, a poster session, and a social/dinner provided opportunities for information exchange about progress in a broad range of Vision 21 technologies, research and development priorities, and long-range program direction. Approximately 100 representatives from private-sector organizations, academia, national laboratories, and government attended the 1 1/2 day conference. Three technical sessions included Technology Development (general), Materials, and Modeling and Process Simulation. Papers and presentations will be posted on the NETL Internet site and the proceedings will be provided on a CD-ROM.

For his thought-provoking address, I would like to thank the keynote speaker for the conference, Dr. Klaus Lackner, Ewing Worzel Professor of Geophysics, Columbia University. Thanks are also due to the NETL session chairs, Richard A. Dennis, Richard B. Read, and Isaac K. Gamwo, the Vision 21 team, and to all of the other participants who helped make the conference a success.
