2012 West Virginia Science Bowl Results
|
Morgantown High School demonstrated its academic prowess as it defeated 17 other teams on Saturday, Feb 4 to capture the 21st Annual West Virginia Regional Science Bowl and earn an expense-paid trip to the National Science Bowl® scheduled for April 26-30, 2012, in Washington, D.C.
Members of the winning team are Andrew Maloney, Samet Demircan, Nima Ronaghi, Dev Someshwar, and Shiv Sunil, and Joe Melia, coach. In addition to the Washington, D.C., trip, the winning team will also receive a traveling trophy to keep for a year, as well as individual medals and other prizes. The second-, third-, and fourth-place finishers were, respectively, George Washington High School, Wheeling Park High School, and Bridgeport High School. Fairmont High School and Parkersburg High School tied for fifth place.
At the National Science Bowl®, Morgantown High School will compete against elite high school science teams from around the country. The students will have the opportunity to participate in science seminars and hands-on science discovery team challenges. Top teams will receive trophies and other awards, including science trips. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) created the National Science Bowl® and regional competitions to encourage high school students from across the nation to excel in math and science and pursue careers in those fields.
This year's event included the welcoming address from U.S. Rep. David McKinley, W.Va. District 1, and the keynote address by West Virginia University President Dr. James P. Clements. Both McKinley and Clements have engineering and technology backgrounds, and both called the students "West Virginia's brightest." They encouraged the students to pursue careers in the sciences and technology, saying they are our nation's future.
Thanks to the entire NETL community, our sponsors, and state universities for making this a memorable event! Please see our Facebook and Webpage for picture and video updates throughout the week and in the coming month.
