The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (DOE/NETL), and the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC), South Campus, would like to invite you to participate in one of the premier scientific events for middle school students, the Southwestern Pennsylvania Middle School Science Bowl 2010 on February 27, 2010.  This will be NETL’s first year sponsoring the middle school competition.

There is a change this year in the registration process from past years, all teams who are registering to complete, must do so through the National Science Bowl website by January 7, 2010.

For those who are not familiar with the Science Bowl here are some highlights:

• The competition is open to middle school students (school, scouts, home school) from Southwestern Pennsylvania (SW PA).   Complete eligibility requirements are located at the National Science Bowl website.
• Teams are quizzed on their scientific knowledge in areas such as life sciences, physical sciences, earth sciences, mathematics and general science.
• The winning team will receive an expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the DOE National Science Bowl. (April 29 - May 4, 2010)  At the National Science Bowl, the team will also compete in a Solar Car Challenge.

Teams may request the use of a buzzer system to practice for the competition beginning October 1, 2009.  The systems must be returned to NETL by January 2, 2010.

The registration fee will cover breakfast, lunch and science bowl shirt on Saturday, February 27th, for all participating teams.
