The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (DOE/NETL), and the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC), South Campus, would like to invite you to participate in one of the premier scientific events for high school students, the Southwestern Pennsylvania High School Science Bowl 2010 on February 20, 2010.  This will be NETL’s 19th year sponsoring the high school competition.

There is a change this year in the registration process from past years, all teams who are registering to complete, must do so through the National Science Bowl website by January 7, 2010.

For those who are not familiar with the Science Bowl here are some highlights:

• The competition is open to high school students (school, scouts, home school) from Southwestern Pennsylvania (SW PA).   Complete eligibility requirements are located at the National Science Bowl website.
• Teams are quizzed on their scientific knowledge in areas such as biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, earth science, general science, and mathematics.
• The winning team will receive an expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the DOE National Science Bowl. (April 29 - May 4, 2010)
• For the past 18 years, the winners of the SWPA Science Bowl have placed in the top ten at the National Competition.
• In 2006, the SWPA sponsored school won the National Competition, had lunch at the White House with the First Lady and traveled to Paris, France.
• In 2007, the SWPA sponsored school placed second in the National Competition and traveled to France to visit Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.

Teams may request the use of a buzzer system to practice for the competition beginning October 1, 2009.  The systems must be returned to NETL by January 2, 2010.

The registration fee will cover breakfast, lunch and science bowl shirt on Saturday, February 20th, for all participating teams.
