Integrated Pollutant Removal from Fossil-Fueled Power Plants (IPR)

The Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) has developed the Integrated Pollutant Removal from Fossil-Fueled Power Plants (IPR) [PDF-516KB] which is a gas clean-up/heat recovery operation. Oxy-fuel combustion of coal generates denitrified combustion gas comprising dominantly CO2 and H2O. The combustion gas is dried through repeated condensations and the remaining CO2-rich fluid is compressed to a sequestration-ready supercritical mixture, in a gas clean-up/heat recovery operation known as IPR. Mercury and sulfur compounds are captured with the CO2 or removed through reagent additions during IPR. Heat recovery during IPR has the potential to improve thermal efficiency in existing plants retrofitted with oxy-combustion.NETL is seeking licensing and/or collaboration partners for this technology.
