Integrated Pollutant Removal from Fossil-Fueled Power Plants (IPR)

The Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) has developed the Integrated Pollutant Removal from Fossil-Fueled Power Plants (IPR) [PDF-516KB] which is a gas clean-up/heat recovery operation. Oxy-fuel combustion of coal generates denitrified combustion gas comprising dominantly CO₂ and H₂O. The combustion gas is dried through repeated condensations and the remaining CO₂-rich fluid is compressed to a sequestration-ready supercritical mixture, in a gas clean-up/heat recovery operation known as IPR. Mercury and sulfur compounds are captured with the CO₂ or removed through reagent additions during IPR. Heat recovery during IPR has the potential to improve thermal efficiency in existing plants retrofitted with oxy-combustion.NETL is seeking licensing and/or collaboration partners for this technology.
