Innovative Training

The AVESTAR™ Center offers a variety of courses that utilize classroom learning, simulator-based learning in a control-room operations environment, and immersive learning in an interactive 3D virtual plant environment.  Using operator training stations with human machine interface (HMI) displays, trainees can manage control room operations in real time.  For field operator training, participants can immerse themselves in a realistic 3D plant and use an avatar to carry out physical tasks like turning a manual valve or switching on a pump.

All of the courses introduce trainees to base-load plant operation, control, startups (cold, warm, and hot), and shutdowns.  Advanced courses require participants to become familiar with coordinated control, fuel switching, power-demand load shedding, and load following, as well as to problem solve equipment and process malfunctions.

Designed to ensure workforce development, training is offered for both control room and plant field operators, as well as engineers and managers.  The importance of teamwork and communication is stressed during all of the courses.

Such comprehensive simulator-based instruction allows for realistic training without compromising worker, equipment, and environmental safety.  It also better prepares operators and engineers to manage the plant closer to economic constraints while minimizing or avoiding the impact of any potentially harmful, wasteful, or inefficient events.

The AVESTAR™ Center currently offers the following IGCC, Gasification, and Combined Cycle training courses:

IGCC Simulator

Integrated Gasification Combustion Cycle (IGCC) Orientation for Engineers and Managers.

This four-day familiarization course is designed to increase understanding of IGCC with CO2 capture processes to personnel assigned as engineers and managers in the power industry.

Introduction to IGCC Operations.

This comprehensive ten-day course is designed to introduce engineers, managers, and operators to IGCC process operations including gasification, CO2 capture, and combined cycle operations.

IGCC Operations for Advanced Operators.

This comprehensive ten-day course is designed increase understanding of IGCC plant operations and control, including gasification, CO2 capture, and combined cycle operation for personnel assigned as IGCC control room operators.
