NETL AVESTAR™ Center Showcased for DOE's Carbon Capture Simulation Initiative

The AVESTAR™ Center hosted an open house and CO2 capture simulator-based training session for the DOE’s multi-lab Carbon Capture Simulation Initiative (CCSI) semi-annual review meeting.  At the open house, the AVESTAR team provided live demonstrations of the Center’s real-time IGCC dynamic simulator and 3D virtual immersive training system to more than 70 CCSI meeting participants, including members of the CCSI power industry advisory board and five collaborating DOE national labs, namely NETL, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.  During the three-hour hands-on simulator-based training session, industry participants operated the pre-combustion 90% CO2 capture and compression section of the IGCC power plant.  Leveraging the AVESTAR Center, NETL is leading CCSI efforts on the development of dynamic simulation and control technology for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of pre- and oxy-combustion carbon capture processes identified as key industrial challenge problems.  The ultimate goal of CCSI is to develop state-of-the-art modeling and simulation tools to accelerate the widespread deployment of carbon capture technologies to hundreds of power plants.
