AVESTAR™ Team Completes Factory Acceptance Test for IGCC Immersive Training System
NETL completed the successful factory acceptance testing of a 3D virtual immersive training system (ITS) developed for real-time interactive use with the high-fidelity IGCC dynamic simulator available at the AVESTAR™ Center. With collaborators from West Virginia University, Fossil Consulting Services, and Invensys Operations Management, the AVESTAR™ team performed a comprehensive final review of the 3D plant layout and piping interconnections for all major sections of the IGCC system including the air separation unit, gasifier, syngas cleanup, CO2 capture, and combined cycle for power generation. ITS software testing included spot checking of local panel field switches, remote field valves, transmitters, gauges, trends, malfunctions, sounds, and animations, all within the virtual plant environment developed using the EYESIM software from Invensys. To conduct an overall hardware and software performance test, the AVESTAR™ team combined the IGCC dynamic simulator with the ITS instructor station and two ITS client computers running separate instances of the 3D plant environment. The AVESTAR™ team also tested the powerful and flexible customization tool for modifying the virtual plant and its attributes, including the addition of new virtual actors such as trend displays, web browsers, and malfunctions (e.g., leaks, fires). Scheduled for operational deployment at NETL during the week of July 16th, 2012, the 3D virtual ITS will enable AVESTAR’s™ workforce training, education, and R&D programs to link IGCC control room and field operations for improved performance, safety, and environment sustainability.
